What Caught My Eye – Week Ending 6/11/22

Each week I read through a crazy amount of content. Who knows what will catch my eye. Some times I may devote an entire post to something, other times it may just be little mind worms that either inspire me, make me mad or even laugh. You never know what I may put here. I have an eclectic collection of interests in life. Items are posted in no particular order, and I will provide the full link to the articles in case anyone is interested in checking them out.

TL;DR? This week we cover a quick set of links covering :

  1. The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch found? – I could not help it.
  2. With this news I may be immortal – Will Coffee help you live longer?
  3. Will the real slim Shake-y please stand up – Was Shakespeare a copy cat? Im thinking so.
  4. The power and impact of fonts – A conversation that still persists…
  5. That is some interesting crap! – The odor replication machine seems a bit excessive

The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch?

“And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, ‘O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.’ And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large chulapas. And the Lord spake, saying, ‘First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.’

With this news I may be immortal! Does Coffee Help you live longer?

At first I thought that science had finally proved that morning addiction and ridiculous consumption levels were the key to eternal life. Turns out its more complicated than that. 🙂

Will the real slim Shake-y please stand up – Was Shakespeare a copy cat? Im thinking so.

To my logical mind its not really that far of a stretch that Shakespeare built upon stories and plays that had already existed before him. With mounting evidence, computer modeling, and Indiana Jones style adventures through libraries and book collections – I think we are zeroing in on a long lost truth and the lost genius and scholarship of Sir Thomas North.

The power of Fonts

Over twenty years ago I remember sitting in an office with Dave Ohara at the Red West Campus of Microsoft discussing numerous things but the stories that stick out still in my mind was his work on fonts and typefaces, their impact, the science and art of it all. In the time before that talk I had not given it much more than a passing thought but listening to those stories gave me a much greater appreciation for that work. This article sucked me back in time into that office into that conversation.

That is some interesting crap!

Vikings do the darndest things. Archeology often studies the things left behind. Although arguably this may take that statement a bit too far. And so does some of the technology created to help experience the artifacts left behind by an unhealthy Viking in what is now the United Kingdom. Some things have questionable scientific value. What am I talking about? Experience it yourself here!
